Namibia Border Crossings: Overland by Car

A practical guide to Namibia border crossings overland by car — South Africa, Botswana, Zambia — paperwork, vehicle letters, and where the queues actually happen.

7 min readPublished: 22 April 2026

Namibia's land borders are mostly straightforward, but each one has its own rhythm. The paperwork is not complicated, but if you arrive without it, you will not cross. This is the practical version of what to bring, where to cross, and which posts get slow.

Documents you always need

Passport with at least 6 months validity and 2 blank pages.

Vehicle cross-border letter from the rental company — confirms permission to take the car across borders. Issued only if you tell them in advance.

Driver's licence and the original rental agreement.

Proof of onward travel for the country you are entering, in some cases.

Quick check

Is this you?

South Africa borders

Noordoewer is the main southern border. Open long hours, well-staffed, can get slow during South African school holidays.

Ariamsvlei (eastern crossing toward Upington) is quieter and good for cross-Kalahari routes.

Both require road tax (Cross-Border Charges Permit) and the vehicle letter. Do not arrive on a Friday afternoon in December.

Botswana borders

Mamuno (Trans-Kalahari) is the main crossing for Maun-bound routes from Windhoek. Smooth most of the time.

Mohembo (north, near Mahangu) and Ngoma (Zambezi region into Chobe) are the Caprivi-side crossings. Both straightforward, slower outside business hours.

Botswana road tax is paid on entry. Foot-and-mouth disease checks happen at internal checkpoints — do not bring uncooked meat across.

Zambia border

Katima Mulilo / Wenela is the main crossing into Zambia from the Caprivi. Straightforward, but Zambia's vehicle paperwork (carbon tax, road toll, council levy, third-party insurance) can take 30–60 minutes.

If you are going to Victoria Falls, you can also cross Botswana → Zimbabwe at Kazungula instead. Different paperwork, different fees.

Border timing

Most posts open 06:00–18:00 or 07:00–22:00 depending on the border. Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before closing.

Friday afternoon, school holidays, and the week between Christmas and New Year are the slow times.

Mid-morning on a normal weekday is usually the fastest.

Money and SIMs at the border

Carry small notes in the local currency of the country you are entering. Border bureaucracies prefer cash.

Local SIMs are usually easier to buy in the first town past the border than at the post itself.

Common border mistakes

Forgetting the vehicle cross-border letter. Without it, you do not cross.

Crossing late and getting stuck in the next country with no fuel station open.

Trying to cross at a small post that turns out to be only for local traffic.

Final verdict

Borders are not the hardest part of a Namibia trip, but they are the easiest to get wrong on the day. Bring the paperwork, cross during business hours, and leave a buffer. We can help shape multi-country routes so the border legs do not become the trip's bottleneck.
